Canada were unable to drive home the advantage gained by Yuvraj Samra’s ton and two early wickets as an unscathed 146-run stand for the third wicket between Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips got the Kiwis home with 29 balls to spare.
Phillips top-scored with a brutal 76 not out of 36 balls while Ravindra finished unbeaten with 59 off 39 deliveries. New Zealand’s victory sent them through and eliminated Canada in addition to the UAE and Afghanistan.
His form will be a significant boost for New Zealand as they head into the Super 8 stages of the T20 World Cup. The Blackcaps are scheduled to face Sri Lanka, England and, in all likelihood, Pakistan, with all three fixtures set to be hosted by the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
“We did have a good experience over here a year or so back playing Sri Lanka when they were really, really strong at home,” he recalled. “They were producing pitches that were turning a lot, and having that experience helps. I don’t think they’ll turn to that extent this time, but it’s about understanding our options, how we attack the game, and whether 160 becomes a good score. The grounds are bigger as well, so twos and threes will be more crucial than just boundaries.”
Mitchell Santner missed the Canada game due to illness, forcing New Zealand to draft in Cole McConchie, who endured a tough outing. While the senior pro is expected to return for the first Super 8 fixture, the all-round contributions of Phillips and Ravindra could become even more imperative in the coming games, particularly if New Zealand are to better their underwhelming 2024 campaign and make a deeper run this time around.
