Good turnout for the New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Both teams wanted to bat first and have decided not to pick a specialist spinner. The first Test of 2026 is going to be between the oldest rivals in cricket. Australia took merely 11 days to retain the Ashes, however in the previous Test England ended their 15-year winless drought Down Under.

England reach 211/3 at Tea break on opening day

The lightmeter comes out, and off the players go. The crowd boo. The covers coming on at the moment in anticipation of rain. Tea has been taken. Ideal conditions for batting and both Root and Brook have added 154 unbeaten so far. The former has been solid as a rock while Brook survived a few nervy moments. That’s how he plays. Always keeps the bowlers interested.

44th Over
150-run stand is up between Root, Brook - ENG 208/3

The proficient pair has brought the game on an even keel after Australia had the better of the early exchanges by dismissing England’s top-order. There is a bit of drizzle in the air as Neser returns to the attack for his tenth over.

42nd Over
Barmy Army getting warmed up now as England attain 200
Floodlights on. Gloomy clouds in the background. There was forecast for showers today. Carey goes back after having kept up to the stumps for a while now. Starc is loosening up. He was off for a few overs.

Australia aim to apply the brakes on breezy England - ENG 179/3

Marnus Labuschagne, in a chat with Fox Sports: We are just trying to slow the game down a little bit, they are getting off strike probably a fraction easily there. We’re just trying to slow the game down, get a couple more wickets and then really put the squeeze back on. I am not behind the wicket today, so I can’t really see if there’s any sort of movement – swing or seam. It looks like the wicket is a little bit slow. We just got to hang in there.

Partnership zooms to a ton as England rebuild - ENG 170/3

Time for some hydration. The pitch is flat and both Brook and Root have had no issues at all in dealing with the Australian quicks. There was just a solitary moment of concern when Brook top-edged the pull and nearly holed out. Hard work for the bowlers in this session so far. Scope for some spin I reckon soon, in the form of Travis Head as Nathan Lyon is on the bench.

34th Over
Harry Brook, Joe Root fifties stabilize England - ENG 161/3

The sun is out in all its glory and Root raises fifty. He raises the bat. A short of length delivery outside off, scythed to deep backward point. The Barmy Army are up to clap for the experienced campaigner. His partner Harry Brook has a half-century in the kitty as well as England make a neat recovery after being down in the doldrums. Beau Webster’s maiden over witnesses the accomplishments.

24th Over
Time for Lunch on Day 1 of the final Test - ENG 114/3

Flurry of boundaries for England as the first session comes to an end. Root with a glorious cover drive and Brook follows suit. Both are standing outside the crease to negate the movement. England have their hopes pinned on the duo. At 57/3, England were under pressure when the two Yorkshire batters joined hands. They must kick on post Lunch for their team is still under strife.

21st Over
In-form Joe Root holds the key for England - ENG 87/3

Shortish ball wide of off, lynchpin Root arches back to nicely cut it through backward point.

19th Over
Hosts the happier ones as first session goes on - AUS 80/3
Two slips and a gully in position as Boland continues after Cameron Green’s introduction into the attack. Joe Root and Harry Brook occupy the crease, a blend of ebullience and experience. The onus is on the right-handers to bail England out of choppy waters.
17th Over
Alex Carey standing up to the stumps - ENG 75/3

Confident appeal for lbw, turned down and Australia decide against the review. Good length ball jagging back in, Root plays all around it as he misses the clip. Contact above the knee-roll on the front pad and ball-tracking says bouncing over the middle-stump. Sharp call from umpire Chris Gaffaney.

13th Over
Doubly whammy jolts England after first hour - ENG 57/3
Two batters on nought out in the middle now as Bethell and Crawley fall in quick succession. Neser to continue with three slips and a gully in place.

While the southpaw got a faint outside edge while trying to defend, Crawley was rapped on the pads adjacent to the stumps. A wicket each for Starc, Boland and Neser as Australia hunt in a pack.

11th Over
Bethell, Crawley settle in after Duckett's departure - AUS 47/1

Two fielders in the deep on the leg-side for spearhead Starc as he operates in tandem with Boland. The groundsman is out with the hammer to flatten the area around Starc’s landing area.

Cracker of a shot to get off the mark from Bethell. Width on offer, the length is slightly on the shorter side. The youngster cuts beautifully square on the off-side.

7th Over
Starc continues to make an impact in Ashes - ENG 35/1

Australia have toppled the first domino. Edged and taken! 143.2kph, nibbling away on a good length around the fifth-stump channel. That could have been let go on line but survival is never Duckett’s priority. Chases it with a tame poke. Thick outside edge is caught by Carey.

6th Over
Scott Boland asks questions in his first over - AUS 27/0
Bowling change. Three slips and a gully in place. Following a delivery that whistled past the outside edge, Boland produces a nip-backer. Crawley shuffles across and leaves it alone only to cop it on the back leg. Ball-tracking shows it to be going over the off-stump.
2nd Over
Streaky boundary for Crawley off Neser - ENG 11/0

Length ball that straightens a bit off the surface, Crawley pushes from the crease, not with hard hands though and the outside edge bisects third slip and gully.

1st Over
England begin innings on a positive note - ENG 5/0

Duckett opens his account with a boundary. Half-volley on middle-leg and the explosive opener flicks it away to the left of square leg. Nicely timed against Mitchell Starc and the ball is quick to reach the rope.
