Hasaranga handed two-Test ban after taking U-turn on retirement

Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lankan legspinning all-rounder, was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.” during the third ODI in the recently-concluded series against Bangladesh. The incident occurred in the 37th over of the game when Hasaranga snatched his cap from the umpire and ridiculed the umpiring in the match.

He announced his retirement from Test cricket in August last year at 26 years of age with an eye on prolonging his limited overs career. A regular feature in Sri Lanka’s limited overs side – having played 48 ODIs and 58 T20Is – and an in-demand player in franchise leagues around the globe, Hasaranga had earned only four Test caps and picked four wickets, apart from compiling a half-century.

The fast-scoring right-hander could only manage 196 runs in those four matches at an average of 28. Having made his debut against South Africa in 2020, his last Test appearance came in April 2021 against Bangladesh.

In first-class cricket, he has three centuries to his name along with 102 wickets in 44 matches. He is currently leading his Lanka Premier League side B-Love Kandy, and will play a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s forthcoming Asia Cup and World Cup campaigns.
