Ruturaj Gaikwad reveals that MS Dhoni dropped a hint about CSK captaincy in 2023

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the new Chennai Super Kings captain, revealed that his illustrious predecessor MS Dhoni had given him hints regarding a potential leadership switch last year. Just one day prior to the commencement of Indian Premier League 2024, the change was indeed made with Dhoni passing the baton to Gaikwad while still remaining a player.

On March 22, the first match of IPL 2024 will be held between CSK and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Though Dhoni has retired from international cricket in 2019, he continues to be a popular figure in the Indian cricketing landscape. The 42-year-old played a crucial role as a captain of CSK by securing five IPL titles for the team. He guided India to victory in the 2007 World Twenty20, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Gaikwad, a technically correct right-hander who has been with CSK since the 2019 IPL auction, has shown remarkable form and consistency. His shot-making prowess and composed batting style have solidified his position as one of the team’s key members. In the IPL 2023 season, Gaikwad’s contributions were particularly instrumental as he amassed 590 runs in 16 appearances.

CSK great Suresh Raina highlighted the importance of the IPL 2024 season for CSK, terming it a crucial period for the team to plan for the future under new leadership. CSK have previously encountered challenges with captaincy transition in the 2022 IPL season when Ravindra Jadeja stepped down after leading the franchise in eight games, leading to Dhoni resuming the role.

However, under Dhoni’s stewardship, Gaikwad is poised to usher CSK into a new era, consolidating the legacy left by one of cricket’s greatest brains.
