After South Africa’s stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj opted to bat, Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks dovetailed for a 129-run partnership for the third wicket to set a strong platform. Quinton de Kock was dismissed cheaply by Mohammed Siraj while debutant Shahbaz Ahmed ended Janneman Malan’s promising knock. Markram and Hendricks joined forces with South Africa at 40/2 in the 10th over, and their alliance lasted for more than 20 overs as they helped the visitors make good progress. Hendricks was brilliant with his wrists on both sides of the wicket while Markram nailed his drives having appeared a bit scratchy at the start of his innings.
