England all-rounder Sam Curran will unfortunately miss the rest of the summer due to a groin injury. A statement from Surrey confirmed that Curran has been assessed for the injury and will undergo groin surgery on Friday, August 21.
The latest setback hinders Curranβs endeavour for a comeback in Test cricket, a format he last played back in 2021. Following Ben Stokesβs sudden retirement, Curran was being considered as an option in the Joe Root-led team, with selector Marcus North saying the 28-year-old provided βa certain balanceβ to the team.
However, he had also pointed out that Curran has been carrying a couple of niggles due to his appreciable workload and was consequently not chosen for the first two Pakistan Tests. βI think it would be unfair to put him into these first two Tests,β North had said earlier this month. βHeβs someone our backroom staff and medical team will be working with in the coming weeks to make sure that he potentially becomes an option in the third Test. Heβs someone that we really value highly, and we see playing a role in the future for us as an allrounder.β
Curran last featured in The Hundred, where he led MI London. Prior to that, he had featured in the home white-ball series against India.
