‘Hit the top of off’ is a bowling coach’s go-to catchphrase. Jack Plom swore by the holy fast-bowling mantra against Yorkshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup as Harry Duke lost his off-pole to a good-length ball that veered away a fraction. The wicketkeeper-batsman was unsure as to whether he played inside the line or the seam movement did the trick, but even the non-striker couldn’t resolve his query with conviction. Anyway, the coach is ecstatic.
