Shardul Thakur’s selection for the first Test against England did raise a few eyebrows as it came at the expense of R Ashwin, but the medium-pacer has repaid the faith with the prized scalp of Joe Root. A cunning nip-backer from Thakur jagged in from a full length, finding the England skipper a fraction late on the flick. And by the time he could’ve spotted the ball and made amends, the umpire’s finger was up in a flash.
It was a glaring reminder of Root’s conversion problem too, having been unable to kick on after raising a rock-solid fifty, yet again.
India on a roll this afternoon.
