Australia kept West Indies at bay with a pair of 142-run partnerships on Day 1 in Perth – first between Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja (65) and then later between Labuschagne and Steve Smith (59*). The batter involved in both stands finished unbeaten on 154*, his eighth Test century powering the hosts to a dominant 293/2 at the end of Day 1 in Perth. Kraigg Brathwaite shuffled his bowlers around but to no avai as Australia made hay on a surface which got progressively easier for batting.
