Rashid picks up his third wicket as Smith misses ton

Australia have posted a competitive score of 280/8 on a slow pitch in Sydney. Runs are hard to come by when the ball gets softer, and they struggled to get the big hits away towards the end as England used their cutters and found some reverse swing as well to pull things back. But it doesn’t look like chasing 280 will be as straightforward a task as it was in Adelaide. Australia were able to work their way to that total thanks to the efforts of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitch Marsh, with Smith anchoring the innings, and the latter two playing freely around him. They seemed set for a meatier score if not for Adil Rashid’s spell as he took three wickets, before Chris Woakes and David Willey finished off nicely.
