Warwickshire avoid relegation thanks to Norwell’s career-best 9/62

Liam Norwell turned out to be Warwickshire’s saviour on the final day of the County Championship as his career-best 9 for 62 in the second innings handed his side a pulsating five-run win at Edgbaston, Birmingham. In pursuit of just 139 for victory, Hampshire were shot out for 133 in a thrilling finish that helped Warwickshire avoid relegation.

Warwickshire kicked off the day at 62/2 in their second essay and ended up with 177 in 39.2 overs. Despite Nick Gubbins’s 46 and the late resistance from James Fuller (22) Warwickshire overcame Hampshire’s fight to emerge victorious. They finished in the eighth spot with 141 points, three more than Yorkshire who became the second team to be demoted along with Gloucestershire.
