Reduced to 9 for 5 in the series opener against India, South Africa welcomed any runs. Aiden Markram (25 off 24) and Wayne Parnell’s (24 off 37) brief knocks took them to 30/5 at the end of powerplay but it was Keshav Maharaj who smacked two sixes and five boundaries in his precious 35-ball cameo of 41 that was also the top-scoring effort for the visitors. He walked out to bat when Harshal Patel had removed South Africa’s last recognised batter in Aiden Markram, took his time settling in and then gradually began to look for boundaries. Thanks to his spirited efforts lower down the order, South Africa could post a respectable total.
