Freak injury rules Jonny Bairstow out of third Test and T20 World Cup

Jonny Bairstow is set to miss the third Test against South Africa and the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia after suffering a lower limb injury while playing golf on Friday, September 2. The news comes shortly after England announced their 15-member World Cup squad, and a replacement for Bairstow will be named in due course. For the third Test starting on September 7, Ben Duckett has been drafted into the side.

“Bairstow sustained a lower limb injury in a freak accident whilst playing golf on Friday in Leeds. He will see a specialist next week to ascertain the full extent of the injury.

“A further announcement will be made in due course on who will replace Bairstow England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad,” read the statement from ECB.

Bairstow put out his statement on Instagram stating that he would need an operation for the injury sustained due to a slip while playing golf. It’s grim news for England as Bairstow had hit six hundreds and amassed over 1000 runs in Test cricket in 2022 and was also the third-highest run-getter across formats this year while topping the charts for England.
