Having licked their wounds from the innings defeat in the first Test at Lord’s, England put in an impressive performance on the opening day in Manchester to gain early advantage. Stalwarts Stuart Broad and James Anderson shone bright with the ball as the England pacers made the most hay in the favourable conditions to bowl South Africa out for a lowly 151. England, in response, lost early wickets but a counter-attacking knock from Jonny Bairstow resuscitated their innings as the hosts ended the opening day at a decent 111 for 3, 40 adrift from South Africa’s first innings total.
Brilliance from our bowlers whilst our batters fightback on day one.
