A superb performance with the ball was backed up by proactive batting by Jonny Bairstow as England gained early advantage in the second Test against South Africa at Old Trafford. James Anderson and Stuart Broad snared three wickets apiece to bowl South Africa out for a paltry 151. England, in response, were in a spot of bother at 43/3 before Bairstow led a typical counterpunch as the hosts went into Stumps on Thursday at 111/3, trailing by 40 runs.
Brief scores: South Africa 151 (Kagiso Rabada 36; James Anderson 3-32, Stuart Broad 3-37) lead England 111/3 (Jonny Bairstow 38; Lungi Ngidi 1-20) by 40 runs.
