Alex Hales stands and delivers a six over long-on

Alex Hales and Joe Root both made noteworthy contributions to Trent Rockets’ cause as they defeated Birmingham Phoenix, last year’s Hundred finalists, in a match which did very little to assuage the debate about how England’s top-order batting might best shape up at the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

Hales struck 58 from 41 balls with five fours and two maximums while Root saw his side home with a typical no-fuss innings of 34 off 25 as the Phoenix score of 143 for seven was overhauled with three balls to spare. Hales played many a scintillating shot, with the flat-batted six over long-on standing out for its authoritativeness.
