The target of 378 chased down by England is the best ever by their team in the fourth innings of a Test match, eclipsing the 359 they scored against Australia at Headingley in 2019. In all Tests on English soil only once has a higher target been successfully accomplished – 404 by Don Bradman’s Australia against the home side in Ashes 1948. There was just a solitary instance of a team successfully gunning down a 300+ fourth innings target against India before England’s win in Birmingham. Jonny Bairstow has been at the heart of England’s refreshing new approach.
