Root, Bairstow rustle up fifties to dim India’s advantage

Till the end of Day 3, India were in a position of strength, and they were sitting pretty even after setting a stiff target of 378. But England came out all guns blazing and with the same ultra-positive approach once again. The openers got them off to a speedy start and although they lost three wickets in a cluster, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow steadied the ship in the final session. Bumrah was impressive as usual, claiming a couple of wickets, and Alex Lees was run-out, but none of the other Indian bowlers made much of an impact.

M Siraj did create a chance, but Bairstow was shelled by Hanuma Vihari. Had that catch been taken, the equation might probably have been different, but that wasn’t to be. With 119 more runs to tick off, Root and Bairstow look well set to take England over the line and deny India a historic series win.
