In the first hour, Ben Foakes sped to his fifty but New Zealand struck regularly and managed to end England's innings just past the halfway stage of the morning session. Root's innings finally came to a conclusion when he fell to a slower delivery from Trent Boult, handing a catch to Tim Southee at cover. Broad struck a couple of fours before nicking a Michael Bracewell delivery to slip where Daryl Mitchell held on to a sharp catch. Foakes was run out after being sent back by Matty Potts, who in turn was castled by Boult as the left-armer bagged his 10th five-wicket haul.
