Ben Stokes will find the England Test captaincy to be a learning curve, as per team-mate Jonny Bairstow. The Durham all-rounder will lead England out for the first time as the permanent Test captain on Thursday, with new Test head coach Brendon McCullum overseeing his first game in charge against his home nation. England have won just won one and lost 11 of their last 17 Tests, a run which included a 4-0 thrashing in the Ashes over the winter which led to the sacking of Chris Silverwood as head coach and signalled the end of Joe Root’s captaincy.
