Ben Stokes has thrown his weight behind Joe Root, offering his ”good friend” love, respect and support after his decision to quit Test captaincy. Root stepped down from the leadership role last week, saying the job had taken a toll on him recently, after demoralizing tours of Australia and the Caribbean capped a string of poor outcomes. The 31-year-old right-hander is England’s second-highest Test run-scorer of all time, next best to Alastair Cook. He amassed 1,708 Test runs in 2021, including six Test centuries.
