An opportunity to break the 80-run stand finally came England’s way only for skipper Joe Root to squander it standing at first slip. He got distracted by the edge deflecting off Jos Buttler’s glove but he did have time to react and get his hands in the right place. The edge, off Jack Leach’s bowling, was thick enough so Buttler couldn’t move to his left quickly. Root wasn’t expecting the ball to come to him and was caught napping as the visitors bungled up a golden chance to slice through the partnership.
