Australia pacer Mitchell Starc kick-started the Ashes with a wicket of the first ball of the series. Starc bowled a peach of a delivery to dismiss left-handed opener Rory Burns on a duck as he shuffled too far across and was castled round his legs. Starc found a hint of swing as he drew first blood for Australia in emphatic fashion. Englandโs batting on day one of the Ashes opener was nothing to write about as the visitors folded for a reprehensible 147, with Jos Buttlerโs brisk 39 being the top score of the innings.
