In a spot of bother at 145/4, India were rescued by an unbeaten 113-run stand between debutant Shreyas Iyer and the ever-dependable Ravindra Jadeja. Kyle Jamieson was tough to negotiate, working his way to three wickets, but Shubman Gill notched up his fourth Test fifty to steady the ship before Iyer and Jadeja took control. New Zealand picked two spinners because it’s a spin-dominant territory but Ajaz Patel was way off colour, so much so that they chose to employ the negative line than looking to take wickets.
