England Test skipper Joe Root believes the Yorkshire racism scandal has “fractured our game and torn lives apart” and will offer his support to the club in the endeavour to “make the sport I love better for everyone”. Root penned down a note describing his feelings in the aftermath of the scandal that sent ripples across the cricketing fraternity, wanting to see “change and actions that will see Yorkshire rise” and ”produce a culture that harnesses a diverse environment” after its treatment of former player Azeem Rafiq.
A report found Rafiq was a victim of “racial harassment and bullying” at Yorkshire but the club said it would not discipline anyone. Yorkshire have faced far-sweeping criticism, with the England and Wales Cricket Board suspending its right to host international matches and other major games, while several sponsors have ended their association.
