It was reported last night by ESPNcricinfo that Moeen Ali was to retire from Test cricket, and today he spoke to the website about the reasons behind the decision. Moeen talked of the India series and how he felt he was not fully immersed within the battle, finding it more difficult than usual to concentrate when batting.
He mentioned that he had struggled with the "mental side" of fielding and that after the Old Trafford Test was cancelled he was "done" and happy to take his leave from the format. English fans owe the off-spinning all-rounder a debt of gratitude for all that he has done for the game in the country – languidly brilliant on the field, and inspirational to so many off it.
