Riding on Sam Cook’s brilliant ten-wicket haul, Essex handed Northamptonshire a mauling by an innings and 44 runs inside four sessions to lift the County Championship Division Two title. Northamptonshire had their hopes of clinching the silverware dashed in the first innings itself as they were rolled out for a shambolic 81. The writing was on the wall as Essex posted 170 in response and went on to massacre Northamptonshire again in the second dig. Half an hour was all Essex required on day two to skittle the opposition out and reign supreme in what was a maniacally lopsided summit clash.
