On this day in 2019, England were enduring more Ashes woes as Joe Root was bowled first ball by an absolute peach from Pat Cummins, crashing into the top of the home skipper’s off stump. England were chasing 383 in the fourth Test in Manchester after Australia had put on 497/8 declared and 186/6 declared either side of England’s first-innings 301 all out. In their stuttering chase, the hosts were eventually bowled out for 197 as Australia took a 2-1 lead into the fifth Test thanks to a double-hundred from Steve Smith.
