The tourists’ openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma were batting obdurately, playing and missing but also brandishing their oh-so-technical forward defensives with gusto. It appeared that the home side, having bowled with such excellent discipline, were in need of something special. That came in the slips, an unlikely event given England’s recent catching record, as Jonny Bairstow took an absolute stunner with his left hand. Some wild, disbelieving England celebrations ensued as Rahul was forced to take his leave on the stroke of lunch.
