On this day in 2015, Kumar Sangakkara took his bow from international cricket, bringing to a close a career that yielded 28,016 runs, 63 centuries and 748 dismissals for Sri Lanka. Sangakkara is unquestionably one of the very best to ever play the game, and a reel of one of his favourite shots, the cover drive, demonstrates the class with which he rose to the top of the sport. Sangakkara’s most extraordinary record is the one produced in whites: he scored 12,400 Test runs at an average of 57.4. Sri Lankan cricket has arguably never been the same since he and good friend Mahela Jayawardene retired.
Don’t bowl there to Kumar Sangakkara. What better way to mark the great man’s birthday than with this collection of classic cover drives?! Enjoy… pic.twitter.com/CHXYGbMzGJ
