Dawid Malan has been called up to England’s Test squad for their third Test against India at Headingley. England are in need of someone to firm up their most fragile of top orders, and upon viewing the highlights of his maiden Test century, Malan inspires some confidence that he is the man to do so. His average is modest, his record against good length deliveries poor, but Malan showed on the 2017/18 Ashes tour down under that he did not lack the mental grit for the game’s most brutal format. At Perth, he counter-attacked with England 42-3, showing a much needed knack for releasing the pressure after an early collapse.
