On this day 21 years ago, Devon Malcolm produced one of the all-time great fast-bowling performances as he took 9-57 for England in South Africa’s second innings at the Oval. His performance was described by Allan Donald as one of the best he had ever seen, and capped off one of England’s most memorable games in their Test history. The home side were 1-0 in the series, having been humiliated at Lord’s by 356 runs in the first outing and lost out in a drawn second at Headingley. Malcolm’s spell is particularly memorable given his famous quote when South Africa were batting, where they were told by the England quick, “You guys are history”.
