The strapping backbone of England’s batting anatomy, Joe Root raked up his 22nd Test ton in the second Test against India at Lord’s. It is the first time that the England captain has scored hundreds in successive innings in Test cricket; it is also the first instance of an England batsman scoring hundreds in back to back innings since Ian Bell in Ashes 2013. As things stand, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that if not for Root’s unyielding mitigation, England would have been in a shambles.
