Naman Dhir has been picked to replace all-rounder Washington Sundar in Indiaβs squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. Washington, who is currently participating in the Asian Games in Japan, has been withdrawn from the assignment in view of the approaching Test series against New Zealand.
With the Ranji Trophy season beginning on October 11, the selectors want Washington to get some red-ball cricket under his belt before the tough two-Test series that begins in Wellington on November 19. Dhir, who recently made his ODI bow in Trivandrum, is uncapped in the shortest form of the game. In 61 T20s, however, he has scored 1222 runs at a strike-rate of 156.2. He featured in all 14 games of IPL 2026 for five-time champions Mumbai Indians, scoring 318 runs at a strike-rate of 147.22, including two half-centuries.
Most recently, Naman was in scintillating form during the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League in Mohali. He almost broke Chris Gayleβs record against Mohali Kings, plundering 173 runs in 64 balls. It is important to note that Washingtonβs withdrawal could be attributed to preparedness, given the Tamil Nadu lad is prone to injuries.
Meanwhile, the selectors have also roped in fast bowler Anshul Kamboj ahead of the third ODI in New Chandigarh. Kamboj will replace Prasidh Krishna, who sustained a hamstring injury. He will now proceed to rehab at the BCCIβs Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Kamboj made his Test debut in Manchester last year and is, as things stand, uncapped in the two international white-ball formats. He is currently in action for India A in the unofficial Tests against Australia A in Puducherry.
