Middlesex continue to take steps to put their house in order, despite a series of off the field challenges . The appointment of Julie Harrington the former CEO of The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and British Cycling, is something of a coup and although it is currently on an interim basis, it is understood from sources within the club that it could become a permanent role. This though, is dependent upon the outcome of the Cricket Regulator’s investigation into a misconduct allegation against Andrew Cornish who has been on an extended leave of absence and has denied any allegations. The finding of those investigations are still awaited.
In recent times, the club has operated under financial constraints and prior to the Andrew Cornish situation had also dealt with the recovery of payments from an ongoing feud with former CEO Richard Goatley and before that the pension administration error which led to being placed under ECB special measures.
The Men’s team are currently handily placed 4th in Division Two of the County Championship and after yet another poor Blast campaign have at least seen results and performances improve of late just before they will switch attention to the One Day Cup which commences this coming Tuesday.
Harrington’s track record seems a strong fit for Middlesex
It’s a tough brief for Harrington, but the club will undoubtedly feel they have found executive leadership that can not just stabilise them off the field, but also lay the foundations for performance on it, both at Lords as MCC tenant and potentially at a new second home.
Her extensive career spans several major sporting organizations and facilities in the UK. Before running national governing bodies, she spent over 15 years in senior roles, including serving as operations director at The Football Association , where she helped oversee the construction and launch of St George’s Park and manage Wembley Stadium.
Harrington served as the CEO of British Cycling between 2017 and 2021, and subsequently as CEO of the British Horseracing Authority until late 2024. During her time at the BHA, she spearheaded the introduction of the trial for “Premier racing” in British horse racing.
Alongside her role at Middlesex Cricket, she also serves as a non-executive director at the London Stadium and the Chester Race Company

After the mis-steps and disappointments that have tried the patience of members and notable former players, Harrington’s appointment appears a smart move. The outcome of the Andrew Cornish investigation and its potential ramifications will be eagerly awaited and the hope is that Harington will provide the vision and leadership needed to drive the club forwards.
