The wonderful oddities of Test cricket on full display as England find wickets against the odds

Test cricket never fails to perplex even the most seasoned of viewers, as that central factor of chance came into play on the second morning of England’s Test with India at Lord’s. On day one England toiled away, beating the outside edge on numerous occasions but finding very little luck and just the three wickets.

On the morning of day two, England statistically did not pose as demanding a question with the ball as the day previous. Using PitchViz, ‘The CricViz Analyst’ discovered that, by assessing the conditions and tracking each delivery, on day one the degree of difficulty for batting was a 6.3/10, dropping to an easier 5.5 on day two.

Nonetheless, England were able to find the edge and provoke the mistakes, and one could argue that their hard work for four sessions was rewarded. They dismissed KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami and will have enjoyed a far more fulfilling lunch after finally being somewhat sated on the field.
