For years, we have searched for answers in the wrong places. We consulted coaches, biomechanists, sports psychologists, and a man in Chelmsford who once played Second XI for Essex and has since become very loud on YouTube. We looked at footwork, grip, trigger movements, the mental load of T20 franchise cricket, and the alarming possibility that someone, somewhere, is no longer eating the right kind of cereal before a Test match. All of it, every last theorised syllable, has been wrong.
The answer, as any physicist will confirm, is gravity.
Isaac Newton, a man who never faced Kyle Jamieson on a Lord’s greentop, nonetheless grasped the fundamental truth of modern batting when an apple reportedly landed on his head. What he perhaps failed to note was that the apple did not play a defensive half-push to gully. Or with impeccable judgement, consistently leave balls that shatter middle and off. Several batters at Lord’s this week have managed even that.
On the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand, England slumped to 55 for 5, with several gentlemen in whites departing for single figures. Joe Root made one. Jamie Smith made one. The debutant Emilio Gay, to his credit, hit his first ball in Test cricket for four. It was a magnificent beginning if only he hadn’t immediately edged to slip for eight. In fairness to Gay, he was perhaps distracted by the sudden realisation that he was, in fact, batting. This can unsettle even the most prepared of men.
Gravity’s malevolent genius revealed
But it was on the second day that gravity truly revealed its malevolent genius. With England apparently recovered and moderately comfortable at 126 for 2, Nathan Smith produced what scientists will one day classify as a Gravitational Cascade Event. Harry Brook and Joe Root were pinned lbw, Ben Stokes lost his off stump, and 126 for 2 became 127 for 6 in eleven balls.
Eleven balls. You could soft-boil an egg in the time it took England to lose four wickets. Three of England’s best batters, dispatched in what commentators called “a passage of play” and what the rest of us decided was a war crime. The ball, incidentally, was not swinging at the speed of light, reversing through dimensions, or emerging from a portal. It was bouncing. Sometimes up. Sometimes less up. This is cricket in England. It has always done this.
The thing is, we have been here before. We have been here so many times that there ought to be a commemorative plaque at the top of the Lord’s pavilion steps, updated quarterly. England lost seven wickets for 41 runs against these same New Zealanders in 2022, on the first Test under the then shiny new Stokes-McCullum “Bazball” regime. The theory at the time was that this was merely the old methods being purged, a caterpillar phase before the butterfly. The butterfly, four years on, still appears to be navigating the cocoon with a bat angled towards gully.
New Zealand, in the spirit of solidarity, have not exactly covered themselves in the laurels of batting immortality either. At stumps on day one, they collapsed to 61 for 6 in 13 overs, with Josh Tongue bowling Tom Blundell to leave them reeling at 29 for 6, the sort of score that makes you wonder whether someone forgot to tell the lower half of the batting order that the match had started.
Is the pull of gravity greater at Lords?
Or, as the gravity theory demands, whether the gravitational pull at Lord’s is simply stronger than at other grounds, concentrated perhaps beneath the famous slope, creating a localised vortex that sucks feet off the crease, bats towards the edge, and decision-making into a void.
By the close of day two, a wicket had fallen every 25 balls across the match, with 11 batsmen out bowled and nine lbw. Neither captain, tellingly, called upon a spinner. Why would you? The pitch was doing quite enough without asking a slow bowler to join the festivities. This is the modern Test match in its purest form: fast bowling, variable bounce, and twenty-two batsmen looking faintly surprised each time the ball arrives.
There is a school of thought, admittedly a small, increasingly embattled school, located somewhere near the boundary rope with a flask of tea or a pint, that suggests footwork might be the issue. That batsmen who move their feet, who get forward to full balls and back to short ones with something resembling intention, fare rather better in these conditions. This school has been ignored comprehensively and we should probably stop mentioning it.
The gravity theory, by contrast, explains everything with beautiful simplicity. It is why batsmen shoulder arms to balls that hit the top of off stump. It is why edges fly to slip at catchable height rather than flying magnificently through the gap. It is why the ball keeps hitting the pad of a man who was, apparently, attempting to play a shot. Gravity. All of it, gravity.
Sir Isaac, had he been at Lord’s this week, would have nodded slowly, published a paper, and been given out lbw for nought. The ball, naturally, was going down leg.
