Australia have one hand on the urn as England are tasked with the challenge of chasing 435 with just four wickets in hand. It is going to be a tough ask for the visitors, can they show the stomach for a fight or will the hosts continue their dominance in this Ashes?
Caught by Labuschagne! Australia have retained the Ashes in emphatic fashion. Fuller than a good length outside off, Tongue drives away from his body and ends up nicking it straight into Labuschagne’s hands at second slip. The celebrations begin for Australia – the players swarm around each other, jump and scream in delight. It’s taken 11 days for Australia to go 3-0 up and win this Ashes series.
Archer holes out in the deep! 146.4kph, short and wide, the Australians want the batter to slash hard and Archer walks right into the trap. Stands tall on the back foot and gives it the full monty. Hits the ball hard and flat straight down Weatherald’s throat at deep backward point. Starc punches the air in delight as England lose their ninth wicket. They can sniff glory now!
Edged and brilliantly caught! Australia are cock-a-hoop. It’s the in-form Starc who provides the vital breakthrough. That’s been the story of this Ashes.
Fuller than a good length outside off at 138.5kph, Jacks wafts at it away from his body and offers a thick outside edge as the ball straightens a bit off the pitch. Carey dives to his right but Marnus fancies it as well. First slip dives to his left in front of the keeper to take a spectacular one-handed catch. End of a gritty knock from Jacks and he’s crestfallen as England’s hopes will dip drastically with his departure.
Big appeal as the ball crashes into the pads, and up goes umpire Nitin Menon’s finger. Cummins is down on his knees as he rejoices the wicket. Carse sends the decision upstairs. Is it missing leg? Full and angling into the right-hander, Carse is beaten on the flick and wears it on the pad. Impact – umpire’s call and wickets – missing. Successful review!
It’s still advantage Australia but England have Jofra Archer to come who scored an ebullient fifty in the first innings. Moreover, the hosts are a bowler down. Will this go down to the wire? Travis Head and Pat Cummins to dovetail upon resumption.
During the break, read our match feature centered on England’s meticulous bowling display on the fourth morning.
England’s tactful bowling performance was a welcome change after the leather hunts they've been subjected to starting from the second inns in Perth. In roughly ten overs, they not only managed to capture the overnight batters but also the remaining wickets.https://t.co/6r9pVqSW5W

That was an absorbing session, keeping the rain interruption aside. Once cricket resumed, England responded with tenacity. Jamie Smith batted with a whole lot of purpose, rotating the strike, finding the boundaries and gently pushing the innings forward to reach a well-curated fifty. His resistance ended abruptly, though, as a hoick against Mitchell Starc landed in Pat Cummins’ palms at wide mid-on.
England, however, refused to slow down. Will Jacks and Brydon Carse kept the tempo up, playing with freedom and ensuring the crowd at Adelaide Oval was kept in constant thrall. Australia, meanwhile, saw Nathan Lyon walk off the field due to a hamstring issue. They will have to manage without the spinner’s esteemed services for the rest of this match.
With a couple of sessions yet to unfold, Australia do hold the upper hand, but the rhythms of this contest suggest there may be further twists and turns in store. Can England conjure something special and keep the Ashes alive?
It’s a near-perfect Sunday in Adelaide. Australia sit fairly in command, but England’s batting has added a welcome note of adventure. As I type, Brydon Carse has creamed the ball through covers. The flame of hope flickers for England even as Australia are just three strikes away from sealing the series.
A wicket against the run of play. Mitchell Starc nabs the set batter and he’s absolutely thrilled. The adrenaline rush spells doom for Jamie Smith. On a length around middle and leg as the keeper-bat tried to slog it across the line. Miscues it towards wide mid-on where Cummins receives a safe catch. First wicket of the innings for Mitchell Starc, but an entertaining knock by Smith is over. Australia break into the tail, as a result.
This pitch has behaved well throughout the third Test. England had opportunities to make it count with more refined application, and even now there’s no real sign of wear and tear, it’s still a very good surface to bat on. Travis Head, the part-timer, is into the attack.
The umpires ask the groundsmen to unfurl the covers. Play stopped due to rain. This should be a passing shower. Just the hessian to cover the pitch. Both the batters have displayed proactivity and barring a couple of plays and misses, they’ve looked in sublime touch. Now, the bigger and thicker sheet is in place to protect the square.
In-slanting short ball, Smith judges the length early and muscles the pull high and handsome over deep backward square leg. Right off the meat of the bat. He cleared the rope against Nathan Lyon too in one of the preceding overs. England will hope the fireworks keep blasting as they still need just under 200 runs to win.
