Jayden Seales fined for breaching ICC code of conduct

West Indies quick Jayden Seales was fined for breaching the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct during the second Test match against India in Delhi. Apart from copping a fine of 25 percent of his match fee for the violation, Seales was also handed his second demerit point in a 24-month period with the first attracted against Bangladesh in a Test match last December.

The incident occurred on the opening day of the Test in the 29th over of the Indian innings. Seales had fielded the ball in his follow-through and hurled it back at the batter Yashasvi Jaiswal with the ball thudding into his pads. He was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

However, Seales did contest the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft as a consequence of which a formal hearing was required. While the 24-year-old reckoned that he was attempting to run out the Indian opener, the match referee referred to replay clips and deemed Seales’ attempts unnecessary and inappropriate.

West Indies might have been defeated 2-0 by India but they fared much better in Delhi as compared to Ahmedabad. Their skipper Roston Chase hailed this performance as a “stepping stone” for the Caribbean troops to improve as a Test-playing nation.

“I think this is the kind of fight that I wanted to see from us, from matches before. So, I think this is a stepping stone, a building step for us to go forward and improve as a Test playing nation,” Chase said.
