Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc returns for India ODIs

Mitchell Starc returns to the Australian ODI mix for the three-match series against India commencing on October 19 in Perth. Alongside the pace spearhead, Matthew Short and Mitchell Owen too return to a 15-member squad following recoveries from a side strain and concussion respectively. Matthew Renshaw has also found a mention after time away from the ODI set-up.

Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the troops with Pat Cummins having opted out of this white-ball assignment in order to regain fitness for the Ashes series on November 21. Cricket Australia have also announced the squad for the initial two games of the five-match T20I series which will be carried out from October 29 to November 8 in preparation for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.

Australia T20I squad (first two games): Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

This will be Starc’s first assignment of the season having missed the South Africa series as he planned on managing his workload for this summer’s Ashes series. The experienced campaigner has already retired from T20I cricket.

There are plenty of outgoing players from the ODI squad. These include Marnus Labuschagne, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott and Matthew Kuhnemann who all featured in Australia’s previous ODI rubbers against South Africa in August.

Alex Carey will not be available for the first ODI in Perth as he will turn up for the South Australian Redbacks in the Sheffield Shield against Queensland but will be back for the last two ODIs. Renshaw marks a comeback to the ODI set up for the first time since 2022, following consistent performances for Australia A and Queensland.

The remainder of the squad includes Travis Head and Josh Inglis besides the all-round triumvirate of Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green and captain Marsh. The pace pack consists of Josh Hazlewood, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Ben Dwarshuis alongside Starc. Bartlett and Dwarshuis are more than capable of scoring some handy runs lower down the order. Adam Zampa is the lone frontline spinner in the squad.

Following the ODI series, Green will link up with Western Australia in preparation for the upcoming Ashes.
