Starc, Boland make mincemeat of West Indies in Sabina Park

West Indies were shot out for just 27 on the third day at Sabina Park, the second-lowest total in the history of Test cricket, which proffered Australia a jumbo 176-run win and a 3-0 clean sweep of the series. Mayhem ensued after Lunch on Day 3 as Mitchell Starc registered the fastest five-wicket haul (15 balls) and Scott Boland claimed a hat-trick to blow the West Indian batting to smithereens in an eye-catching spell of pace bowling.

In pursuit of 204 in conditions that had favoured the speed merchants right through the match, West Indies faltered horribly. Starc, featuring in his 100th Test, struck with the very first ball of the innings and triggered a collapse of biblical proportions. He saw the back of John Campbell, Kevlon Anderson and Brandon King in the same over, with the last two succumbing to full deliveries that tailed in to sneak through the gap between bat and pad.

At 0 for 3, the hosts were down in the doldrums but Starc was hungry for more. In his third over, he trapped Mikyle Louis in front to accomplish 400 Test wickets, becoming only the fourth Australian to register the landmark, and two balls later he trounced Shai Hope with another devilish inswinger. Starc is an absolute beast with the pink ball in hand, and this seemed to be business as usual. He was generating express pace, getting the ball to move late and not giving even an iota of respite to the batters.

Josh Hazlewood expedited West Indies’ downfall by getting rid of Roston Chase and the score read a shambolic 11 for 6. Justin Greaves, who was the only West Indies batter to reach double digits, showed a semblance of spirit along with Alzarri Joseph and they took the innings through to Tea. However, on the other side, Boland wreaked havoc.

In an explosive three-ball burst post Tea, Boland had Greaves edging to the slips, trapped Shamar Joseph lbw courtesy a successful review and then castled Jomel Warrican with a beauty that nipped in and hit the top of off stump. It was Boland’s maiden Test hat-trick and only the 10th by an Australian in Test history.

A fielding folly was the only reason West Indies avoided equalling the all-time lowest Test total of 26, a record New Zealand wouldn’t be proud of holding. Starc returned to knock over Jayden Seales and finished with splendid figures of 6/9 in 7.3 overs. The West Indies innings lasted a mere 14.3 overs and a smidgen over an hour.

Earlier in the day, the proceedings wore a different look. Australia resumed at 99/6 in their second innings with a lead of 181 and Cameron Green was occupying the crease on 42. Albeit Shamar Joseph dismissed him with the first ball of the morning, an absolute peach that decked in and banged into the top of off stump. Alzarri Joseph then mopped up the tail, picking up 5/27 and combining with Shamar for nine spoils between them as Australia were bundled out for 121.

Brief Scores: Australia 225 & 121 (Cameron Green 42, Alzarri Joseph 5-27) beat West Indies 143 & 27 (Mitchell Starc 6-9, Scott Boland 3-2) by 176 runs
