Kamboj, Brevis, and Noor scupper Gujarat Titans’ top-two hopes

An emphatic 83-run win for Chennai Super Kings hampered Gujarat Titans’ prospect of securing a spot in the top two, which they could have claimed with a win today in IPL 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After a scintillating batting show that saw them post 230 runs after winning the toss, CSK shone with the ball to end their otherwise grim season on a cheerful note.

Ayush Mhatre contributed half of CSK’s total inside the PowerPlay as he embarked on a boundary-hitting spree that resulted in three fours and as many sixes. Arshad Khan bore the brunt of his resplendent strokeplay, leaking 28 runs in an over. He lofted him down the ground for a six and followed it up with a pulled maximum and when Khan shifted his line to outside off he was driven stylishly for four. Mohammed Siraj did the containing job to perfection from the other end and as did Prasidh Krishna, who had Mhatre skying a full delivery to mid off for a 17-ball 34.

A breezy 63-run partnership between Devon Conway and Urvil Patel ensured there was no slowdown after that hurtful dent. They slid into their rhythm immediately after the PowerPlay with Gerald Coetzee being taken apart for thirteen runs. Patel departed in a bid to hit Sai Kishore for a second consecutive six but Shivam Dube, walking in to bat at number four, safeguarded CSK against another momentum drop as he clobbered two sixes in an eight-ball knock. The well-set Conway, meanwhile, took down Rashid Khan, even bringing up his fifty with a crunchy hit off the spinner. Through the middle-overs the all-round fireworks ensured that CSK never fell to the wayside and were all set for a lip-smacking finish.

It came from the willow of Dewald Brevis as his 23-ball 57 bolstered the comparisons with the great AB de Villiers. He was the chief architect of a 74-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth wicket, inching closer to his fifty with a sequence of 6, 6, 4 even though his partner’s 18-ball 21 was holding the visitors back. In an otherwise murky bowling card, Prasidh stood out once again for Gujarat Titans, conceding only 22 in his full quota. However, despite bowling an impressive 9-run final over, which included the wicket of Brevis, he could not prevent CSK from romping towards a potentially match-winning total.

Gujarat Titans’ forte through IPL 2025 – their top order – was back in the hut inside the PowerPlay. CSK had their plans in place with Ravindra Jadeja opening the attack but it was Anshul Kamboj who actually got the breakthrough. Stationing a slip and hitting the hard lengths, Kamboj had Shubman Gill edging as he gave the bowler the charge. Jos Buttler perished in the next over, slashing Khaleel Ahmed to deep point. Four balls later Kamboj struck again as he cramped Sherfane Rutherford on the pull to induce a false shot. At 30/3, GT were down in the dumps in a demanding chase.

Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan, although, put on a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket to reignite the hopes. The duo picked up 18 runs off a Shivam Dube over but just when GT were starting to believe Ravindra Jadeja returned to snag both in the 11th over. Noor Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana then burst through the lower order while Kamboj fittingly earned the last wicket to put an end to the game. Gujarat, albeit, still managed to get past 122 which meant that CSK will finish with the wooden spoon for the first time in IPL history despite their dominance in this match.

Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 230/5 in 20 overs (Dewald Brevis 57, Devon Conway 52; Prasidh Krishna 2-22) beat Gujarat Titans 147 all out in 18.3 overs (Sai Sudharsan 41; Anshul Kamboj 3-13, Noor Ahmed 3-21) by 83 runs

What’s next?

It’s the end of CSK’s campaign but their consolation triumph against Gujarat Titans puts Gill’s men in a tricky spot. Their position at the points table, still No. 1 as of today, could change dramatically and they might even fall out of the top two. If that happens, they could be forced to play the Eliminator.
