In light of the out-of-ordinary situation that the franchises are facing after the one-week suspension of IPL, the BCCI has stated it is allowing temporary replacements for the IPL, a provision permissible only for this edition.
In a communication to the franchises on May 14, the BCCI said it is reconsidering the replacement player provision. “Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” the league said.

“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement taken from this point forward, will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement Players will have to register for the IPL PLayer Auction 2026. The replacements which were approved or taken before the suspended period will be eligible for retention ahead of 2026 player auction.”
Thereby, the BCCI has put the directives in place to avoid a situation where franchises are effectively incentivised to sign replacements as a way of sidestepping the auction process, rather than for genuine reasons.
In this backdrop, Mustafizur Rahman coming in place of Jake Fraser-McGurk will be deemed a temporary replacement. The BCCI said, “McGurk has opted to leave from the remainder of the IPL due to personal reasons.” Many more such replacements are on the cards.
