Cameron Green returns to Australia Test squad for WTC final

Cameron Green is set for a return to Test cricket as he was named in Australia’s 15-member squad for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s next month, and the ensuing tour of West Indies, announced by Cricket Australia on Tuesday, May 13. On the comeback trail from a back injury, Green last played a Test in March 2024.

Skipper Pat Cummins and fellow quick Josh Hazlewood will also be donning the Baggy Green again, having missed the Champions Trophy due to injuries even as they made their competitive comeback in IPL 2025. Hazlewood had to sit out the last game for his franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with a shoulder niggle and was a doubtful starter for the upcoming game as well before the league got suspended for a week due to the tensions on the India-Pakistan border.

Brendan Doggett, the Player of the Match in the Sheffield Shield final, has been named as the only travelling reserve alongside the squad that otherwise mirrors the one that defeated Sri Lanka 2-0 and India 3-1 last summer.

“We are fortunate and looking forward to having Pat (Cummins), Josh (Hazlewood) and Cam (Green) back in the squad,” said chair of selectors George Bailey. “The team finished the WTC cycle with an impressive series victory in Sri Lanka following an equally strong summer in defeating India for the first time in a decade.

“Those series capped a consistent performance across the two-year cycle and now presents us with the incredibly exciting opportunity to defend the World Test Championship. It means a lot to the group to reach the final and they are very much looking forward to the challenge South Africa will present at Lord’s.”

After an impressive start to his Test career, Beau Webster has managed to hang on to the all-rounder’s berth while Sam Konstas has returned to the fold after departing from Sri Lanka early to honor his domestic commitments with New South Wales. On the other hand, left-arm orthodox Matthew Kuhnemann has been selected ahead of off-spinner Todd Murphy as Australia aspire to become the first team to defend their WTC title.

Australia’s Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.

Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett
