Glenn Phillips, who suffered a groin injury while fielding in Gujarat Titans’ fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6, has been ruled out of the rest of IPL 2025. An IPL statement said that Phillips has “returned to New Zealand”. GT, the current table-toppers with four wins from five games, haven’t announced a replacement for Phillips yet.
Phillips, who didn’t get any game time during his stay with the team, came on as a substitute fielder after the fifth over of the SRH innings but had to limp off soon. He fielded the fourth ball of that over, bowled by Prasidh Krishna, and hurled a throw at the striker’s end as Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy pinched a quick single. He held his groin straightaway, and had to hobble off the field before the next delivery, accompanied by other members of the GT camp.
GT previously lost the services of Kagiso Rabada, on April 3, when he left home “to deal with an important personal matter”. There is no clarity on his timeline for return, and the franchise hasn’t named a replacement for the speed merchant either.
Only seven overseas players were brought by GT for this season, and they are unfortunately down to five. Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan and Sherfane Rutherford have made it to the team sheet in all their games so far. They also have Karim Janat, the Afghanistan allrounder, and Gerald Coetzee, the South African pacer, in the squad. Coetzee, though, is on the comeback trail from an injury, which put him out of both the SA20 and Champions Trophy earlier this year.
