Tanush Kotian, Mumbai’s offspinning all-rounder, has been summoned by the Indian team in Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The move comes on the heels of R Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket at the end of the third Test in Brisbane.
The 26-year-old Kotian, who was partaking in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, will link up with the squad in Melbourne ahead of the third Test. Since he was recently a part of the India A side which toured Australia, there is likely to be no visa quandaries.
Kotian has 33 first-class games under his belt, having scored 1525 runs at an average of 41.21 and picking 101 wickets at an average of 25.70. He was awarded the Player of the Tournament in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning campaign in 2023-24, where he tallied 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and picked 29 wickets at 16.96.

Shami deemed unfit for selection
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami’s keenly-awaited return to the national side is set to be deferred after the BCCI Medical Staff declared the senior pro unfit for selection for the final two Tests of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In a media release on Monday, the BCCI confirmed that Shami experienced minor swelling in his left knee due to the bowling workload accrued since returning from a lengthy layoff. While the swelling is along expected lines, it also means that Shami isn’t quite fit yet to resume playing at the big stage.
