The complexion of the game changed after Tea as England accounted for eight wickets by the end of day’s play. Shoaib Bashir, who bowled 20 of the 83 overs sent down on Day 1, picked four wickets as New Zealand finished on 319/8.

Having been sidelined with a groin injury for the entirety of New Zealand’s historic 3-0 victory against India last month, Kane Williamson has returned to the mix with aplomb. The experienced batter had undergone rehabilitation to be declared fully fit for the home season, replacing Mark Chapman in the squad.
