Shafali Verma hit a wonderful 76 not out off 42 balls as the Birmingham Phoenix beat the Welsh Fire by ten wickets in their women’s Hundred clash on Monday. At just 17, Verma had shown her frightening talent for India on their tour of England earlier this summer, but had not quite got going in the Hundred before Monday.
She combined with Eve Jones, who hit a similarly sensational 52 not out off 35 deliveries, to produce the highest batting partnership of the Hundred so far, chasing down the Fire’s total of 127 in just 76 balls. The benefits of having India’s female stars in the competition has been clear throughout, and Verma has now added hers to the list of her compatriots’ successes.
