Jonathan Trott will continue to serve as the head coach of Afghanistan after the country’s cricket board handed him a contract extension through to the end of 2024 following a host of admirable performances under his tutelage.
The former England Test cricketer was at the helm during the team’s impressive World Cup campaign in India last year where Afghanistan recorded wins against defending champions England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands and gave eventual champions Australia a stiff fight before Glenn Maxwell pulled off an incredible Houdini act.
Under Trott, Afghanistan registered a maiden bilateral ODI series win over Bangladesh as well as a first-ever T20I series win over Pakistan. They are currently engaged in a Twenty20 International assignment with United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will take on India later this month, taking forward their build-up to this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.
