Labuschagne’s unrestrained sweep finds deep square leg

Australia lose their third wicket in the form of Steve Smith with their lead standing at 98. England were handed a massive lifeline in the Headingley Test. This was a huge moment in the context of the match as Smith endured another failure in his landmark 100th Test and could not believe what he had done. Moeen Ali tossed it up nicely and Smith just clipped it straight to the man at midwicket.

The off-spinner also accounted for Marnus Labuschagne, who swept in the air to find Harry Brook at deep square leg. Like it was the case on the opening day, the onus is now on Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh to revive Australia. The visitors lead by 142. If Australia can drag the lead past 300 tomorrow, they will fancy their chances of going 3-0 up.

A lion-hearted performance from Ben Stokes was the highlight of the absorbing action till Tea on Day 2 of the Headingley Test as England kept the deficit down to 26 in the first innings. No slouch with the bat, Mark Wood contributed 24 off 8 to prop England up after regular wickets had given the advantage to Australia. Skipper Pat Cummins led from the front, picking up six wickets to ensure the visitors have a small lead.
